Stories as vehicle of getting the Experience.

David Seah had some interesting posts in his blog. He talks about storytelling as a method for designing. What I gather from the posts is that he is really searching to get the feeling/emotion/message accross. It seems he want to use the story as the main tool for setting up the experience he wants to create for the customer.
I think setting up the story you want to be told is the main objective of experience design. A good story tells ideas, points of views, emotions and mood, facts and vision in an engaging way. Storytelling is the oldest way of getting information accross and I also think it is the closest to the human itself and all its facets.
Good stories give a sense of a deeper layer, there is more than what is told. Good stories always worked on your imagination and let’s you wonder about all the little details that are not being told. Good stories have what it takes to move people on different levels. Good stories link the subconscious with the conciousness.
A good story is never done. A story that has been told in it’s whole is over, the audience moves on. Stories need to be open ended with branches to build upon. They need to be kept moving and evolving. A story adapts to it’s timeframe where it is told in. Thats why good design is never done and why design has to evolve with time.
A story has to form a Myth in its pure form: a story accepted as history/facts and serves to explain the point of view of a people. A myth that forms the platform of the experience you are designing. Every element has to add and amplify the story. A good told story in the designing process is maybe the best tool to get the wanted ingredient X for the product.

Funny, that you came up with some artwork form Goro. He used to make concept art for Triangle
Unfortunately he can’t anymore, because of his current contract. He will be working at Disney Animation Studios within a few months, and i don’t think they will let him either :/

Oh, I didn’t know that :O
That was a good catch. Indeed unfortunately for you that Disney discovered him.
I hope that you still could use some of his probably great concepts.

For those interested in designing stories (or telling stories with design): David Seah is currently exploring the subject in a series called ‘Storytelling by design’. Really interesting stuff, not in the least because he doesn’t pretend to know what he’s talking about. Also related: Creating Passionate Users by Kathy Sierra @ http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/. Both Sierra’s and Seah’s blogs are excellent reads (and I really mean excellent). Be sure to check out the archives!
